Bill Mize was the best placed SC Velo racer at the Iowa City Weekend April 26-27 by earning 4th place in both the 40+ road race and criterium versus some tough competitors. With a 3rd at Altoona he is likely in the top 3 of the current Iowa cup series.

Cold weather and the fact that there was a race in Iowa on the same weekend probably contributed to the small fields that lined up for the Spring Cycling Classic in Lincoln 4/12-13.

Chesterman 5th at Sylvan Island

Jay Chesterman finshed 5th among the Experts and Brandon McCullough was 25th among the Novice's at the Sylvan Island Stampede on April 13th.

Jay's recap:
"It was a good race on a perfect course. The course was slightly wet at the start and then fast and dry after 4 laps of the 8 lap race. The new IF hardtail was a dream to ride. I could tell that accelerating out of corners was much easier on the legs. The back took some hits, but held up. My hands cramped up from all the technical riding; maybe I did not have my shock quite dialed in either."

Off the Back With Neil Schaben

The 9th in the Off the Back series

So, where were you born?
Harlan, Iowa.

What inspired you to start racing and what was your first race?
I started getting interested in cycling in 1984 when I lived in Colorado. It was a great area to ride. Every time I think about it I could kick myself because I lived about 20 miles from where the Coors Classic was making history but I didn’t know anything about it at the time. Later, when I moved back to Iowa I read a lot of Bicycling gag’s and the history and tradition of road racing really began to interest me.

Big Creek Road Race

The Big Creek RR wasn't as friendly to SCV racers as there were some DNF's on Sunday. Cody McCullough finished 8th among the Pro,1,2's and it appears he has the Iowa Cup lead by one point although official standings have not been posted yet.

Marc Walter came in 20th in the top gun event and Scott Fett survived the 4/5 demolition derby race to finish 13th.

Altoona Road Race

Written by: Administrator

Several SCV racers traveled to Altoona, Iowa for the first Iowa Cup event of 2008. It was a sunny 60+ degree day with increasing winds that added to the challenge of the moderately hilly terrain. Racers caught out early by the strong winds faced a long day in the saddle as large gaps quickly opened between those that had good legs and those that didn't.
