Iowa CX Championship

Brent and Bob went down for the Iowa State CX Championship in Altoona on November 14th to do some Master's racing: Bob in 35+ and Brent in 45+.

The course, in a city park with athletic field, had terrain ranging from bumpy, flat, technical with some off-camber; to bumpy, hilly, technical and a bit of pavement through the uphill finish. For good measure, a high-step barrier section and another high barrier at the base of a run-up were included to keep the HR high.

After a too brief warmup, the three Masters fields started at 15 second intervals on the chilly but dry, overcast mid-morning.

The cream quickly rose to the top as Lane, Shrek and C. Vandelune put the hammer down to string out the 35+ with the fastest 45+ers soon working their way through the stragglers. Brent, riding borrowed tubulars, seemed to easily float past Bob early while he banged along on what felt like wagon wheels (or clinchers with a little too much psi).

As Bob went backwards, Brent worked his way to 4th before crashing late losing three places he couldn't regain to finish 7th. Bob finished 9th in his race. Full results are here.

Linn, Greigg at Skyview CX

The first ever CX event in Norfolk was hosted by the EVCC crew at Skyview Park on Saturday, October 24th. This was a nicely flowing power course with one sustained climb, several short ups and downs, a couple of barrier sections but lacking tight, technical challenges. It's a course that a couple fish-out-of-water roadies can handle without too much trouble.

Be Careful Out There

It's getting dark earlier now that fall is upon us. Be extra vigilant in low-light conditions and when headed into the setting sun if you are road riding in the evening. Yesterday evening another cyclist fell victim to a hit and run

The East Village Criterium on Sunday, August 30th was the final event in the Iowa Cup competition for 2009.

Going into the event, Jon Nelson held a narrow lead in the Masters 40+ standings over teammates Scott Wall and Sean Loomis (Colorbiotics). Cody McCullough and Clark Priebe both leant their support to Jon's cause in the combined 30+/40+ race but it was not to be. Jon reported he didn't have the good legs he needed due to inconsistent training as of late. He finished 8th in the race but a stronger Loomis took 2nd and Wall 6th to move ahead in the final standings. Clark Priebe won the 40+ race and Cody was 2nd in 30+.

Although winds had been blowing at 25mph throughout the day of July 15th, by the time our 20k time trial started at 7pm, the wind was perhaps 2mph if not calm on what turned out to be a pleasant 80 degree evening for racing. Cody McCullough came just short of his course record by 2 seconds with a time of 27:15. Graham Renee-Fowler improved his time over the last race by a big 1:05 to win the Eddy Merckx division and Buddy Houts improved by a huge 1:55 over his previous time. Thank you to Greg Gleason of Central Plains Cycling for coming out. Bring your teammates next time.

Nelson 40+ State Criterium Champion

Written by: Admin

Only three Powerade/IF racers traveled to east central Iowa on July 5th for the Gold Pointe Fitness Club Criterium but one of them returned as an Iowa State Champion.

The course for the Iowa State Criterium Championships was located in downtown Cedar Rapids on a .60 mile rectangular circuit that crossed four bridges over the Cedar River per lap. The wide streets offered a slight uphill finishing straight and a slightly downhill back stretch and made for a fast and safe racing venue.
